President – Fay Laing

Fay Laing moved to Nanaimo ten years ago from Vancouver. She has spent over 30 years in the Real Estate business in greater Vancouver, and is now working on Vancouver Island. Fay’s career has provided her with many business, marketing and management skills, which she is happy to share in her volunteer life. Fay spends her personal time working in her garden, travelling and teaching her three grandsons to share in her love for the arts. Fay and her husband, David Laing, enjoy living in the heart of Nanaimo where, over the last ten years, they have spent  their energy restoring a heritage home built in 1891.

Eveline developed an interest in music when she started piano lessons at six years of age, and it has  held a prominent position in her life ever since. After a short career in nursing, she completed her  musical studies and taught music for many years in Edmonton and West Vancouver.

Since moving to Nanaimo in 1989, she has become heavily involved in the city’s cultural scene. When the Vancouver Island Symphony was established, she was appointed the inaugural President, and was  later presented with an Honorary Concert Master’s Chair in perpetuity. She helped promote the building of the Port Theatre, and was delighted when that dream came true.

Eveline was invited to prepare and present courses at VIU for the Faculty of Continuing Studies from 2003 to 2008. ‘Music Through the Ages’ and ‘Let’s Go to the Opera’ were very well received.

A member of the City of Nanaimo’s Cultural Committee for 15 years, she was presented with an Honour in Culture Award in 2013 for her community efforts. Presently, she is a member of the executive committee of the Nanaimo and District Museum Board of Directors.

Eveline believes that Cultural amenities such as music and the performing and visual arts are absolute necessities, which have a positive impact on our daily lives, whether we are listening, watching,  performing or creating them.
