Jelayna Murdoch
Music Therapy
We are delighted to welcome Jelayna Murdoch to the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music as our new Music Therapist. Born in Vancouver, Jelayna connected with music and songwriting at a young age and has passionately worked since then to hone her craft. In 2018, she graduated from Selkirk College’s Contemporary Music & Technology program with a specialization in songwriting. After recently finishing her fourth year of Capilano University’s Bachelor of Music Therapy program, she is thrilled to join our faculty as she completes her music therapy internship.
Jelayna brings a wealth of clinical practicum experience, having worked with clients aged 5 months to 100 years. Her diverse practicums include working in an elementary school, a long-term care home, and a mental health setting. Additionally, she has extensive experience teaching music privately and completed a four-month music teaching internship at the Nyundo School of Music in Rwanda in 2018.
Music therapy offers individuals the opportunity to express themselves primarily through song, with each session customized to meet the unique needs and interests of the individual or group, centered around supporting client goals. No musical experience is necessary, and all ages can benefit from this enriching practice.
